The Walrus Medicine: The Messenger of the Arctic Ocean?
Many Finns have been with curiosity following the news of the past week, as a walrus has landed at the coastal town of Hamina in Southern Finland. The walrus lives normally at the Arctic Ocean, and it is a very special visitor in these southern waters. I have also been following with curiosity the walrus, and what kind of care and attention it has received.
For people with strong connection with nature, it is never a coincidence, why a certain animal, bird, or any other natural being appears into our lives. It is possible, that it can carry a deeper message and significance for our days. With a playful and joyful spirit, let me suggest three possible aspects of “the walrus medicine”:
1. The message of peace
The Beatles made a song “I am a Walrus”, and it says:
“I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly
I'm crying”
In these days, we read day after day news about different kind of horrible events that are caused by one man-made poison in the world: The guns. People are killing themselves and each other by using guns.
The message of both The Beatles and The Walrus is that we are each other:
“I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together”
The medicine of the walrus can be, that it uses its magnificent natural authority to remind us to
Return to Nature
Rest in Natural Peace
Just Be Yourself
We are in this Together
We need to create a world together, that is not producing self-sabotaging gun industry. People and Nations need to take self-responsibility in giving space in harmonious and peace-creating leadership that support disarmament. We all can make choices that promote this kind of leadership and politics.
-We can vote for people who are not supporting armaments and who want to create true peace for the world.
-If you are ready, you can become yourself a candidate, as more people are needed to carry “the message of the walrus” to the humanity!
-We can join peace associations, if we like, and find like-minded friends and support actions that way.
-We can find alternative ways supporting and creating world peace.
-All shamanic work should support the intention of world peace in its larger perspective.
2. Messenger of the Polar Ocean: Save the Arctic Waters!
This walrus shows courage for world travel. It has left its home ocean waters, and made a long journey to a destination where it has never been before. It is like an Elder of its tribe, who has to do this journey for the benefit of its tribe?
It shows openness, courage for the unknown. There are risks for its journey, and how it will be received, and the risks of unknown environment, but it has the wisdom of the walrus for us to connect to. Why the walrus has made such a potentially risky journey?
Maybe it has a message for us that how we should help to protect the Arctic waters, and its sensitive animal and bird kingdoms? Can we help?
Greenpeace suggests that there should be created an Arctic Sanctuary: “Within the Arctic Sanctuary, there would be no fishing, no military activity and no exploration for or extraction of fossil fuels or other minerals from the seabed.”
The need for this is: “Climate change has already removed at least 75 percent of Arctic summer sea ice volume at rates never before experienced in human history. Soon, the Arctic Ocean will be like other oceans for much of the year: open water that is exposed to exploitation and environmental destruction.”

I support the vision of the Arctic Sanctuary, and what ever else is needed for the Arctic tribes of animals and peoples.
3. Power Animal Message
What else does the Walrus symbolize as a power animal?
“Shamans tell us Walrus Spirit is the keeper of ancient knowledge and wisdom. Walrus looms larger than life in our awareness, all two tons, reminding us of the value of seeing a bigger picture. In the latter context, Walrus teaches you secrets have a way of making themselves known no matter how big a wall separates us from them.”
“An interesting fact about newborn Walrus is that the pups can swim right away. This behavior reflects an intimate relationship with the Water Element. The female Walrus nurses their pups for about 12 months, and even afterward, that nurturing continues for several more years. With this in mind, Walrus makes an excellent symbol for positive motherhood.”
I hope that the Walrus finds safely back home. I am so grateful for all the kind people (the police included) who have taken care of this magnificent and respectful animal as it has been so kind to visit us, and remind what is important <3
